Our faculty and students come with diverse perspectives and backgrounds. What connects us is a commitment to public education, lifelong learning, social justice and equity.
Our graduates are deans, principals of schools, superintendents, adult education and higher education leaders and scholars, professors, policy advisors and consultants, K–12 teachers, educators in community centers, colleges, universities and mental health organizations.
EDST’s mission is to provide an innovative, flexible educational environment that respects the knowledge and experience of our students. We offer programs on campus, off-campus cohort programs, an international online program, summer and evening courses.
The Department is known for integrating research with teaching, providing a range of opportunities for students to participate in cutting-edge research. Students are encouraged to be boundary crossers—to think beyond a particular area of education to looking holistically at education throughout life. We encourage students to take courses across programs and other departments in the Faculty of Education.
The Department offers a thought-provoking and motivating environment for different forms of research and inquiry. Many of our students conduct research that connects directly to their practice as educators and others complete research and inquiry aimed at understanding the sociological, philosophical and historical underpinnings of how education is structured and why.
If you are interested in studying in EDST you can apply for a Master of Arts or a Master of Education. Our master’s programs encompass a number of programs including Adult Education, Educational Administration and Leadership, a Joint program in Educational Leadership and Curriculum Studies, Higher Education, Society, Culture and Politics in Education, Ts’‘Kel Program and Adult Learning and Global Change.
We also offer an Education Doctorate and a PhD program.
UBC’s Vancouver campus is located in an international city known for its beautiful environs and diversity. The city provides a unique location to explore education in a variety of contexts.
