EDST welcomes Dr Ali Abdi

Dr. Ali A. Abdi EDST would like to extend a warm welcome to Dr. Ali A. Abdi, who recently joined the EDST Faculty as Department Head. Dr. Abdi comes to the Department of Educational Studies from the University of Alberta where he was a professor in the Department of Educational Policy Studies. Dr. Abdi also served as Co-director for the Center for Global Citizenship Education and Research (CGCER) in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta. Currently Dr. Abdi serves on the board of directors for the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES – USA).Dr. Abdi is also involved in academic publishing, and is the Founding Editor of the Journal of Contemporary Issues in Education (JCIE), as well as the Founding Co-editor of Cultural and Pedagogical Inquiry (CPI). Additionally, Dr. Abdi has also been an author and editor for over 15 books, including the 2013 Education and the politics of difference: select Canadian perspectives with Dr. Ratna Ghosh, and the forthcoming Indigenous discourses on development in Africa with Dr. Edward Shizha.

However, Dr. Abdi does not limit himself to editorial and publication projects, and is involved in research on education and social development around the globe, with a particular focus on educational capacity building, education for all (EFA) projects including women and vulnerable populations’ education, policy development and evaluation, social development education, and the work of teachers in pre-university schooling contexts. To this end, he has worked on projects in Brazil, South Africa, Zambia, Somalia, Senegal, Kenya, Pakistan, and Uganda.
