Born in South Africa, B.A. and U.E.D. University of Natal, M.A. Michigan State University, PhD. University of British Columbia. First holder of the David Lam Chair in Multicultural Education, former President (and present member of the Board) of the International Sociological Association’s Research Committee on Ethnic, Racial and Minority Relations, Board member of Ethnic and Racial Studies (London)
