Applications are invited for a research assistant to serve as ALE-in-ISI Research Assistant.

 

The ALE-in-ISI Partnership is a collaboration between the ALE program at UBC, the German Institute for Adult Education (DIE) in Bonn, Germany, and several other universities and provider organizations, and is funded by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Partnership Development Grant. The project focuses on understanding the relationships between policy, provision and outcomes in Canada and Germany in programs designed to promote the settlement and integration of immigrants into host societies.

 

The RA hired will work under the direction of Dr. Hongxia Shan, the Project Director, and work closely with a Research Associate located in Calgary and the Research Manager at UBC.

 

The research assistant will work on the following tasks in Year 1 of the project:   

 

  • Collaborate with the project’s Research Associate to conduct a scoping review on the adult learning and education (ALE) system for immigrants and refugees.
  • Conduct desk search and help create a typology of organizations, programs, pedagogies, etc. in Canada, with a focus on Alberta and British Columbia.
  • Conduct a review of the context of ALE programs in Canada since 2015, including policies that influence the constitution of ALE programs at the federal, provincial, and city levels – Calgary and Vancouver.
  • Help identify and interview policymakers and key informants following approved research protocols.
  • Contribute to data analysis.
  • Complete other research-related tasks as needed.
  • Prepare draft reports for review.

 

Qualifications: Preferably, applicants will 1) have prior knowledge of adult learning and education policies and programs related to immigrant settlement and integration; 2) have experience conducting literature reviews or scoping reviews; 3) be highly organized; 4) have strong written and oral communication skills; and 5) have experience working with others in a team environment.

 

The position will involve, on average, 40 hours of work per month at an hourly rate of $28-30, depending on level of program. It will start in October 2024, and end in Aug 2025.
