Welcome for a first time to EDST or welcome back for all the old-timers. The campus is already bustling with energy as classes begin and September has already spoiled us with some wonderful sunny days. There is lots to share with you, so we’ll just dive in!
Announcements
Orientation
It’s that time of year again. A whole new cohort of EDST students have arrived on campus and are getting settled in. To help them get acquainted with EDST (and UBC in general), we have organised a social event on Friday the 13th of September (spoooooky). Starting from 3:45pm, we will have a meet-and-greet with the incoming students in the Research Commons in the Ponderosa North building (feel free to reach out to us if you don’t know where that is). Coffee, tea, and (lots of) cakes will be provided, so please do come along and make the new students feel welcome.
Online Resource Bank
We’ve been a little busy over the Summer Term. One of the little projects we’ve been working on is a bank of resources, information, and links to content which we feel the EDST graduate student community needs to know. The first version of this materials bank is now live and you can reach it by clicking here. We’ve tried to put things in a simple and logical way. However, we are far from perfect people, so if you do spot anything that isn’t working, anything that’s clearly wrong, or even if you have suggestions for things we could add to help EDST grad students out, please do let us know by emailing edst.gaa@ubc.ca.
The First Doctoral Colloquium for the 2024/25 Academic Year!
The Doctoral Colloquium is a great opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to learn about the exciting work being done by doctoral students and candidates at the department. Each session is dedicated to one student’s work, and begins with a 20-30 minute presentation, followed by an in-depth discussion. Everyone is welcome to attend and contribute to the discussion!

Call for Student Reps
Once again, we are sending out the call for student representatives to serve on department committees. The following committees are in need of student reps:
- Program committees (Program Committee representatives are also encouraged to represent the program at bi-monthly department meetings):
- Adult & Higher Education (ADHE) Courses
- ADHE Courses Professional Development
- Educational Admin, & Leadership (EDAL)
- MA representative for Joint PHD/MA Management & Admissions Committee
- EdD in Educational Policy and Leadership Management & Admissions Committee
- MA representative for the Graduate Programs Advisory Curriculum Committee
EDAL Student Rep needed!
We are calling for a student representative to serve on the Educational Administration and Leadership (EDAL) program committee starting this September. As a student rep, you’ll have the opportunity to meet and network with the faculty members and the students in the program of EDAL, and share your insights and voice on the operation of the EDAL program. Your participation involves attending the monthly EDAL meetings (every Thursday of the month), reaching out to the EDAL students, and sharing their input and feedback with the EDAL committee. Your participation and input will help us to provide better support to the students in the EDAL program and beyond. If you are in the EDAL program and interested in being an EDAL rep or would like to know more about the volunteer position, please get in touch with the EDAL Program Coordinator Dr. Fei Wang (fei.wang@ubc.ca) . Thank you for your consideration.
