Bio
I was born in Brownsville, Texas, USA, and grew up on both sides of the US-Mexican border and in the Texas Hill Country. With support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Millennial Scholarship and the Hispanic Scholarship Foundation, I graduated from Franciscan University with a B.A. in philosophy and Spanish literature in 2005, University of St. Thomas with an M.A. in educational leadership in 2007, and the Ohio State University with an M.A. and Ph.D. in philosophy of education in 2010.
After my studies, I was appointed Owen Duston Visiting Assistant Professor, Philosophy and Educational Studies, at Wabash College in 2010 and Assistant Professor, Educational Foundations and Research, at the University of North Dakota in 2012, before being appointed Assistant Professor of Philosophy of Education at the University of British Columbia in 2014.
I was granted tenure and promotion to Associate Professor in 2019 and promoted to Professor in 2025. I am also an Associate Member in the Department of Philosophy and Editor-in-Chief of Philosophy of Education, the journal of the Philosophy of Education Society. I will serve as Head of the Department of Educational Studies from 2026 to 2031.
