Spring is finally here! Hope everyone is taking time to enjoy the longer days, budding trees, and daffodils!

Welcome to the new GAA team members!

We wanted to say a big welcome to the two incoming GAA team members, Keenan and Aida! For those of you who don’t already know them, here are there bios:

Keenan Manning

Keenan Manning is a doctoral student in the Department of Educational Studies at UBC. Since completing his MEd at the University of Hong Kong, he has researched and written on a variety of issues in and around higher education, particularly: policy, internationalisation, international student mobility, multiculturalism, and inclusion. His current research focus centres on issues of identity, belonging, and citizenship, and how they affect, and are conceptualised by, minority students in higher education with a focus on Hong Kong.

Aida Mohajeri

Aida Mohajeri is an EDST PhD student at UBC. Her research explores the intersections of unsustainability, higher education, and social inequities. Her past experiences include research and policy in the non-profit, federal government, and education sectors.

Public Scholars Initiative info session

We invite you to the Public Scholars Initiative Information Session for the Department of Education on Monday, March 18th, from 12-1pm, hosted by Dr. Serbulent Turan. Departmental information sessions are tailored for applicants from the discipline, and joined by past or current PSI scholars from the department sharing their experiences and recommendations.

This event will be held virtually and if you would like to attend, please REGISTER by March 15th.

What’s PSI?

UBC’s flagship scholarship program to encourage and fund impactful, cross-disciplinary, multisectoral doctoral research, the Public Scholars Initiative (PSI), is getting ready to accept applications for its 10th cohort of students; this year’s applications will run from Monday, the 11th of March to Sunday, the 12th of May.

Why should I apply?

Launched in 2015, PSI has since won national and international recognition for its focus on ‘reimagining the PhD’ to benefit society and enhance career readiness. Currently PSI has a network of almost 350 doctoral students and alumni from 12 faculties across UBC, and we are looking to add 30-35 more students this year. UBC’s Public Scholars benefit from academic supportprofessional development and networking opportunities, and, not least, up to $20,000 in funding over two years for research expenses and/or stipend.

During the Department of Education information session, you can hear general information about the program and application strategies. Potential applicants can also ask their questions, get personalized help with their applications, and how to make their application stronger.

If you have any questions or comments until then, please do not hesitate to contact us.
