Title

How Can Economics Help Us Understand Educational Equity?

Abstract

What can the tools of economics help reveal about inequity in educational opportunities, resources and outcomes? Economics, as a discipline rooted in understanding resource allocation and human behavior, provides a powerful yet often underused lens for examining how education systems operate and how they can be made more equitable and effective.

In this talk, Yilin Pan will introduce key concepts and methods from the field of Economics of Education in an accessible and nontechnical way, highlighting how they can be used to shed light on critical equity issues such as the returns to education, teacher quality and shortages, disparity in public school funding, the impact and cost-effectiveness of educational interventions, and the design of higher education policies.

Participants will be invited to discuss how these tools might be applied to analyze education policies in the Canadian context, and where to find data needed to support such analyses.
