Indigenous Research Graduate Academic Assistant

Salary: $27.00–$32.40/hour, depending on experience
Hours: Up to 12 hrs/week; max. 180 hrs total

The Department of Educational Studies (EDST) at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a Graduate Academic Assistant (GAA) position to support Indigenous language and place-based learning research projects led by Dr. chuutsqa L. Rorick, Assistant Professor of Indigenous Education and member of the Hesquiaht First Nation.

This opportunity is ideal for a graduate student interested in Indigenous methodologies, land-based pedagogies, language revitalization, and reciprocal research practices. The position offers mentorship in Indigenous research paradigms and academic contributions to projects supporting Indigenous language revitalization and resurgence.

Description and Duties:

The GAA will:
– Conduct literature reviews in Indigenous Education, Indigenous Language Revitalization, and place-based learning.
– Support project coordination and logistics across multiple Indigenous research projects.
– Prepare academic reports, knowledge translation materials, and publications.
– Assist in organizing and documenting bi-weekly research team meetings.
– Contribute to ethical research protocols, especially those involving Indigenous communities.
– Engage in administrative work related to digital Indigenous language projects.
– Translate research into community-friendly formats (e.g., presentations, social media posts).
– Support mentoring and supervision of undergraduate practicum students or volunteers as needed.

Qualifications:

– Currently enrolled in a graduate program (M.Ed., M.A., Ph.D., or Ed.D.).
– In good academic standing.
– Experience in or a demonstrated commitment to Indigenous research and/or language revitalization.
– Strong organizational and communication skills.
– Ability to work independently and relationally in community-based settings.
– Basic computer literacy and administrative competency.
