Bio
I am a PhD Candidate in Educational Studies at the University of British Columbia. I am the grandson of Dutch immigrants who came to Canada after WWII. I grew up in Calgary, and now live on the territories of the Musqueam people. Prior to my research in education, I studied religion and theology. I then worked in community religious instruction in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside for a decade.
My doctoral research is located within the discipline of the philosophy of education. I work on problems of violence in education and pedagogy, specifically focusing on violence’s intersection with the epistemic aspect of the onto-epistemic person. In my work I engage with decolonial theory, imagination, multicentric epistemologies, and phenomenology. I have also contributed to the antifascist education discourse.
Other aspects of my life include sailing, skiing, and camping with my family.
