Title: Navigating the Terrain of Neoliberalism in Higher Education: An Exploration of Definitions and Implications

Speaker: Dr. Sereana Naepi

Date/time: Tuesday, March 19, 10am-12pm

Location: PCN 2012

Abstract: This presentation delves into the complex landscape of neoliberalism within higher education, aiming to explore its definitions and implications within higher education. Neoliberalism, characterized by market-driven approaches and the prioritization of individualism has significantly changed our universities in the last four decades. Inspired by a rejected journal article in which we were told our biases against neoliberalism in higher education were clear we have sought to explore the scholarship of neoliberalism in higher education. Through a critical examination of various definitions and conceptualizations of neoliberalism this presentation aims to provide a nuanced understanding of its multifaceted nature and its impact on higher education systems. Drawing on scholarly literature and contemporary examples, the presentation will analyse how neoliberal ideologies manifest within higher education literature and provide artwork through which to explore the term and connect with each other. Ultimately, this presentation seeks to foster critical dialogue and reflection on how we use neoliberalism as a term to understand our universities. By illuminating the complexities of neoliberalism and its ramifications, this exploration aims to give us a shared language to analyse our world through.
