Title of Presentation:

Philosophical Inquiry and Teacher Education. An exercise in educational thought.

Abstract:

Until the latter half of the 20th century, philosophy played a prominent role in teacher education programs and public educational policies in countries like Brazil, Argentina, France, and Portugal. However, with the increasing submission of educational discourses and policies to economic imperatives, the value of philosophy as a component of teacher education curricula has been severely questioned. This depreciation arises from perceptions of philosophy as overly abstract or, more significantly, as ineffective for addressing the everyday challenges of education. In this brief reflection, I aim to propose – and illustrate – how philosophy of education can offer a distinctive approach to school experience and have a potential impact on teaching practices.

Speaker’s bio:

Full Professor of Philosophy of Education at the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil, where he earned his doctoral degree. He served as a Visiting Scholar at the Universities of Paris VII (2011-2012) and Paris VIII (2017-2018) and is currently a Visiting Professor at UBC and a member of the Institute of Advanced Studies at USP. With 9 books and approximately 50 articles published in Brazil, Argentina, France, and England, his research focuses on the interrelations between ethics, politics, and education engaging in dialogue with contemporary thinkers such as Hannah Arendt, Paul Ricoeur, and Jacques Rancière.
