We are excited to welcome Dr. Kathryn Accurso as our keynote speaker. Dr. Accurso is a professor in the Department of Language & Literacy Education at UBC, and her talk will address:
Conceptualizing Change in Hard Times
The year 2020 has ushered enormous levels of change into the daily lives of people all around the globe, who are individually and collectively struggling to cope with the effects of the coronavirus disease pandemic. While “change” is normally a topic of great interest to social justice minded graduate students, education researchers, teachers, and teacher educators, these pandemic days have brought a level of personal and professional overwhelm that has left some feeling unmoored in their scholarly work. In response, this interactive keynote is meant to inspire a sense of groundedness with regard to conceptualizing change in (and across) hard times. Dr. Accurso will share research and reflections from her longitudinal work in critical applied linguistics and teacher education to address theoretical, methodological, and practical aspects of the question, “What kind(s) of change do we want and what role does our work play?” Dr. Accurso will close her address by inviting presenters to re-engage research – at this conference and beyond – with inspiration, clarity, and purpose in times that are hard, but also quite hopeful.
