Bio
chuutsqa L. Rorick, is a Hesquiaht First Nations woman with a PhD in Education and an MEd in Indigenous Language Revitalization from the University of Victoria (UVic). As a founding member of the Hesquiaht Language Program, she collaborates with the eight remaining fluent Elders to develop free language resources and create learning environments for Nuu-chah-nulth people. She is an advanced learner-speaker, and teacher of her language.
chuutsqa’s doctoral research focused on Hesquiaht-centered collaborative language resource development, including a 100-hour land-based language camp designed with fluent speakers. In 2020, she began apprenticing with Dr. Lorna Williams through the Spirit Aligned Leadership Program, where they began the process of recording and assembling Lorna’s life stories into an Indigenizing archive. chuutsqa emphasizes Indigenous language-led research and education, implementing programs that strengthen intergenerational transmission, resource creation, and cultural resurgence, thereby contributing to the preservation and revitalization of Indigenous languages and knowledge systems.
