What is the difference between the MA and the MEd Degree?
The MA degree in Educational Studies involves the completion of course work and a substantial independent research project culminating in a master’s thesis. This is the most common path for those wishing to pursue doctoral studies and to become educational researchers, and prepares graduates in the basics of conducting educational research. It is important to talk to your supervisor or the departmental Grad Advisor if you have any questions about the MA degree.
The MEd degree is primarily course based, although some students opt to do a graduating paper. The emphasis in the MEd degree is on the critical use of, rather than the production of, educational scholarship and research. An independent research project culminating in a thesis is not required. It is important to talk to your pro tem supervisor or the departmental Grad Advisor if you have any questions about the MEd degree.
